November recap

by ada

November felt like it will never end – I struggled to cope with life on every possible level. I was homesick for Bregenz, didn’t really get Linz and went to work with a pain of anxiety in my stomach every day. It did not really help that, for the first time in my life, I worked in the classic 8 hours per day, Monday to Friday setting and absolutely hated it. It made me finally understand all those TGIF memes on the internet, haha.

No wonder that I accomplished almost nothing in November other than visiting the small town of Haag…

…the abbey of Melk, inspiration setting for Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose…

…and the oldest Austrian town, Enns:

I’ve already met Hungarians on the top of the Mount St. Odile, under the lighthouse in the Lindauer haven, in the Migros on the Marktstrasse in Bern and on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg. So I wasn’t even surprised to see this in Mauthausen:

Very much like Hungarians, black cats are everywhere, too. Here they provide security services:

In the middle of November I spent a few days at home. We celebrated my sister’s birthday…

…made some half-hearted attempt at Christmas decoration…

…and played board games with Milo, Móricka and The Cat:

The rest of the month I slept through in a Sevofluran induced coma, only going out in the evenings to buy food.

October recap

by ada

On the first day of October (yep, we’re still talking 2015 here) I left Bregenz and crossed Austria to my next placement in Linz:

I moved into my new service apartment only to find out that, due to some mysterious hospital bureaucracy problems (which, to this day, are still unclear to me)  I can’t start working until November. So in a two-hour time span I 1) took a job and had it postponed 2) moved in and out of this room. I should have taken this as a warning sign, turn on my heels and run, never looking back – this would have saved me nine months of misery. Too bad I’m not good at listening to my gut feelings, haha.

Anyway. I had a month to pass, so I took my stuff to a friend’s place and left Linz for Budapest, just on the same day I arrived, to spend the following two weeks at home with my family:

We went on a lot of adventures (properly geared up, of course)…

…and even the rain could not hold us back…

…from meeting crocodiles with sharp teeth…

…and watching sharks being fed:

Most of the time, we had fun…

…until it got to the point of making important decisions, like who gets to drive the car:

Fortunately all we had to do for peace was to bring Halloween a few weeks forward:

Our hard work resulted in this:

In the second half of October I took on a short assignment in Mariazell…

…the home of gingerbread…

…and Our Lady of Hungary:

It is really the best place to spend autumn time:

I was living in a hotel for two weeks – a welcome change to all those service apartments of the past few years. This is what I saw from my balcony:

When I wasn’t leaving for work so early the moon was still up…

…I spent my days eating heart-shaped food…

…collecting autumn paraphernalia…

…and exploring the kingdom of the Ötscher…

…which is a fun place to be both during the day…

…and night:

I got to know this road leading into town…

…and this one, leading out of it, really well:

They took me to the top of mountains…

…and under ground:

Deep into forests…

…over waters…

…to my dream house where I want to spend my life…

…in good company:

I saw the first snow…

and the first snowman of the season:

I took the Stairways To Heaven…

…and some questionable forms of transportation…

…to leave Lower Austria…

…for Styria:

The final conclusion of the month? The same road leads to both heaven and hell. Where you finally end up depends on sheer luck and on that alone.

August recap

by ada

The results of the US election gave me a huge motivation for blogging, because looking back at my sunny summer adventures in 2015 is much more comforting than looking forward to a future in which Donald Trump rules the world; which perspective is, let’s be real, more than terrifying.

Since I can’t change anything (I wish I could), I am now feverishly preparing for WW3 and transforming our cellar into a nuclear shelter do what I can to blend out real life problems and live in the past, so here you are, August 2015.

I started the month with German fireworks in Langenargen:

It was raining light!

untitled-151

It was also a fine opportunity to take out of focus photos of the festively decorated ships…

…and of an unusually empty Lindau at night:

A few days later I spent 11 hours on a train…

untitled-6h

… to get home in time for my mother’s birthday:

untitled-69

She received some handmade presents from Milo and Móricka:

untitled-60j

In the process of creating it Milo got caught red handed. He looks quite embarrassed:

untitled-179

Móricka was rather pleased with the results:

Everybody coped with the heat in his own way: Milo took possession of the electric fan…

untitled-39

…Móricka wore his tribal colours with pride…

untitled-112

…The Cat buried herself in the closet (don’t ask)…

pottom

…my sister put up the grill…

untitled-120

…and I tackled some long overdue personal projects:

When the time came, I crossed Austria again…

untitled-22m

…and got back to Bregenz:

untitled-5n

I spent a lot of time on the road…

…making decisions…

untitled-52-2

…and getting my feet…

…and my bike dirty…

…on forest paths…

…and in water:

untitled-24-4

I met all kinds of animals…

untitled-138

untitled-17-2

…but mainly pigs:

untitled-115-2

I took the Muttersbergbahn…

untitled-110-2

…to look over the mountains around Bludenz:

untitled-84m

I swam in the Bodensee…

…and in the Dornbirner Ach:

untitled-56n

One time I even went to night swimming (the giant groups of bats and mosquitos swarming over me are not pictured but they were REAL):

untitled-6

I visited new cities…

untitled-27-2

…and revisited old favourites:

I also crossed borders, because that’s what I like to do:

I listened to music during the day…

and at night:

I saw (but wasn’t allowed to play) the organ Hans Buchner has once practised on (more than 500 years ago):

I met really old Chinese ladies…

…Bavarian witches…

…and whole families in splendid Vorarlberger tracht:

And, tired but happy, I ended the month just the same way as I started it: with fireworks. This time in Bregenz:

February recap

by ada

I spent the biggest part of February with being sick with different versions of the flu. After being in denial for weeks about my inability to cope with it while working 12 hours a day, it escalated into a sick leave and taking antibiotics.

meds 2

Milo turned two, which we celebrated with a ladybird cake:

Milo bday

I completed my first month on the cardiology ICU as part of the CPR team. The transition from a Hungarian ICU to an Austrian one is tough, and it isn’t going as smooth as I’ve expected. So I went and listened to some lectures at the Wiener Intensivmedizinische Tage to make myself feel better about my own choices:

WIT 2015

I also took some walks with the same purpose…

Untitled 5

…and finally started to feel at home in Vienna. I do still miss Salzburg, though.

Untitled 6

After a more than ten years long hiatus, I revisited the Jewish Museum.

Untitled 78

I spent another few days at home in Budapest and bought two mini skateboards for Milo and Móricka, which they decided to use in a rather unconventional way:

Untitled 11

I saw the first snowdrops of 2015:

Finally, on the last day of February I went to see pretty sparkly stones minerals and fossils at the Spring Fair of the Mineralium Wien:
