August recap

by ada

The results of the US election gave me a huge motivation for blogging, because looking back at my sunny summer adventures in 2015 is much more comforting than looking forward to a future in which Donald Trump rules the world; which perspective is, let’s be real, more than terrifying.

Since I can’t change anything (I wish I could), I am now feverishly preparing for WW3 and transforming our cellar into a nuclear shelter do what I can to blend out real life problems and live in the past, so here you are, August 2015.

I started the month with German fireworks in Langenargen:

untitled-466

It was raining light!

untitled-151

It was also a fine opportunity to take out of focus photos of the festively decorated ships…

uferfest-langenargen-2015-53

…and of an unusually empty Lindau at night:

A few days later I spent 11 hours on a train…

untitled-6h

… to get home in time for my mother’s birthday:

untitled-69

She received some handmade presents from Milo and Móricka:

untitled-60j

In the process of creating it Milo got caught red handed. He looks quite embarrassed:

Móricka was rather pleased with the results:

Everybody coped with the heat in his own way: Milo took possession of the electric fan…

…Móricka wore his tribal colours with pride…

…The Cat buried herself in the closet (don’t ask)…

pottom

…my sister put up the grill…

…and I tackled some long overdue personal projects:

When the time came, I crossed Austria again…

…and got back to Bregenz:

I spent a lot of time on the road…

…and getting my feet…

…and in water:

I met all kinds of animals…

I took the Muttersbergbahn…

I swam in the Bodensee…

One time I even went to night swimming (the giant groups of bats and mosquitos swarming over me are not pictured but they were REAL):

untitled-6

I visited new cities…

untitled-27-2

…and revisited old favourites:

I also crossed borders, because that’s what I like to do:

I listened to music during the day…

and at night:

And, tired but happy, I ended the month just the same way as I started it: with fireworks. This time in Bregenz:

July recap

by ada

The fact that I’m taking refugee at posting about my last summer shows quite clearly how unhappy I have been lately devoted I am to document life chronologically. So let’s recall, from a whole year’s distance, how I spent the glorious July of 2015.

After I quit my job at the cardiology and spent a month at home in Budapest, I finally figured out that the form of nursing that suits me best is travel nursing. I joined an agency and took on my first assignment in the farthest Austrian town possible, Bregenz. And so did the summer, that turned out to be my best summer since years if not decades, begin.

Bregenz 1

I did my best to explore the city…

Bregenz 2

…and promptly found Europe’s narrowest house.

world's thinnest house Bregenz 6

I also met the prettiest inhabitant of the city…

cica 4

… and was constantly reminded of deep truths.

Kunst

I took cable cars to the top of mountains,

Untitled 150

…explored new cities…

Friedrichshafen coffee

…and went to the zoo.

Untitled 364

I crossed the German border…

Lindau 55

… and almost swam over to Switzerland (too bad I’m too old not cool enough for daytime nude swimming in public, haha) (note to self: put on your swimsuit even if you’re only out for groceries. You can never know how your day turns out. Better be prepared).

Alter Rhein Hohenems 52

To make up for missing the Swiss waters, I made a habit of swimming in Lake Constance…

Bodensee 5

…and made sure to visit Switzerland on an other occasion. Without getting my feet wet, this time.

Alte Rheinbruecke Vaduz Sevelen 25

I went to Liechtenstein…

Vaduz Castle 20

…where I met the long gone…

Liechtensteinisches Landesmuseum 85

… and the dead.

Liechtensteinisches Landesmuseum 81

I also got to admire tiny stone carvings inspired by Russian folk tales.

Ural Stone Carvings Liechtensteinisches Landesmuseum Vaduz 39

I visited an (even for me) unusual amount of museums…

Schulmuseum Friedrichshafen 26

…to see contemporary art…

Joan Mitchell Bregenz 66

…and stunning Alemannic fashion,

Schattenburg 12

…to learn about the beginning of hormone substitution therapy,

Progynon 25

…to practice my 17th century Yiddish (haha),

Juedisches Museum Hohenems 4

…and to play with funny clockwork toys.

Dornbirn inatura 88

So, yeah. I have nothing to complain about. July 2015 just turned out to be really, really great.

things that make me happy

by ada

Just to keep record of some of the things that otherwise would be forgotten would I hold onto chronology too strictly; things that made my life better even if only for one short moment.

One of those things was eating cherries…

cherries 3

…especially twin cherries:

twin cherries 1

My bike, Priscilla. I bought her from a Portuguese girl who has since moved back home; and decided to keep the name she gave it (I am the queen of second third fourth tenth hand bikes):

Priscilla 1

That my bike has “happy” written on it…

happy 2

…and that she is not the only happy bike out there:

choose to be happy 1

Things I find in my bed after Milo naps in it (a half meter long plastic toy tram, a ladle, and the naked leg of a Barbie doll, just to name a few):

lego figures 1

My new pink Adidas ballerinas (the only piece of pink clothing I’ve ever owned, I’m fairly sure). I got them at the mall called Mercury Centrum in České Budějovice:

pink shoes 1

This mosaic. It reminds me of Wien:

mosaic Linz 1

Cats on walls…

Bad Isch cats 1

…on doormats…

doormat cat 2

…and in my work email:

Deer on my new hoodie:

deers

The new Mma Ramotswe book:

the woman who walked in sunshine 7

All the three and a half days of summer we’ve got this year (so far)…

Linz summer 11

…which I used for going on bike rides…

summer 1

…and taking cable cars:

Grünberg 3

This cheese I found at Merkur. It is so good (and it reminds me of last summer):

Bregenzerwaelder Camembert 4

That, after 5 months on raw food (and junk food), I can now finally cook again:

my kitchen 7

That my room smells like elderflower:

elderflower tea 1

Móricka’s new manifesto: When I grow up, I will be Ada and I will take the train to places very very far and I will buy all the presents. (I feel like I’m turning into the American Auntie Rich Relative From The Other Side Of The Iron Curtain, a phenomenon I so badly envied from the neighbourhood kids while growing up in Socialist Hungary):

Simi

Those 30.863 voters who turned over the elections (Obviously, I am not allowed to vote in Austria. But I still have my opinions about my pampered, twenty-years old coworkers with their houses and swimming pools, who all voted right radical because of “young blood” and “dahoam”):

Van Der Bellen 1

That I’m moving out of this house (the neighbours! Give me a lonesome island!)…

lift

…because I’m finally, finally leaving Linz. Not a day too early. My time here had so much in common with my last few Dutch months. The city that I failed to click with. The social isolation. The terrible weather (it was snowing yesterday! On the 18th of June!). The frustrating living conditions (the neighbours! Did I mention my neighbours!). The feeling that I’m stuck and that it’s not my fault. The general unhappiness this unfortunate combination brought on me. Truly, it were some miserable eight months. But it’s almost over now!

things that make me happy

by ada

Well, it’s more like things that made me happy at one point of my life during this not-very-well-documented summer, haha. (Actually, it was very well documented but rather poorly shared.) (Btw, I’m rapidly catching up on summer posts, thanks to the awful schleimy October weather and some unidentified but deadly efficient pathogen that ate my respiratory system and my brain and put me in bed for two weeks).

Anyway. Here come some of my summer joys that I want to keep a record of, like…

…orange flowers:

tűzliliom 2

…and orange cats:

Untitled 111

Summer shadows…

…and birds on furniture:

Valtice castle 27

Free books…

…especially this one I was gifted by the nice reception lady at the Heimatmuseum in Schruns:

Enid Blyton 1

Wearing the necklace my mother got from her grandparents for her high school graduation:

chain 3

Meeting Super Mario in the public toilet of the GWL in Bregenz…

Super Mario

…and discovering a proper dwarf colony in my neighbourhood:

törpe 1

That my patients seem to like me…

Liebe Schwester

…and that my coworkers in Bregenz turned out to be awesome (after spending the previous six months in a classic You Can’t Sit With Us situation in Wien, this was without doubt the greatest gift of the summer):

Untitled 2

Stones I collected at various beaches around the Bodensee:

Bodenseesteine 2

Crossing borders…

…and bringing home small reminders of a country I’ve never been to before:

Suisse Garantie 1

That I got to spend my summer in Bregenz, where my days looked like this…

Bregenz Pipeline

Salem 6

…and my nights like this:

That I got to travel a lot…

…and that, on some of my adventures, I even got to have a travel companion:

…and support for those who actually do the job of fighting the cause of the refugee problem. Go Kurds!

things that make me happy

by ada

I can’t believe it’s been more than a year since I last posted in this series. That tells tales about my circumstances lately. I’ve failed miserably with my New Year’s resolution of sharing more of my life here anyway – not that I don’t have a life because I rather do, but it seems I’m not good at getting personal. What I’m good at is taking photos of buildings and flowers, so this place has inevitably became kind of a travel blog, but without the joys and excitement of actual travelling. You know, something like an unofficial Budapest Guide for Weirdos (and for all who enjoy looking at dead butterflies and old medical instruments). This is a lose-lose situation, I’m afraid.

But there are still the small things, like…

…this super cheap waffle place and their raspberry mousse that tastes just like I remember it from my childhood.

Untitled 2

…pretty bees on pretty flowers.

Untitled 1

…visiting museums.

Magyar Természettudományi Múzeum 35

…doing small trips.

Hungarian train

…summer food.

Vácrátót arboretum wild strawberry

…thrifted summer clothes. Too bad I’m seven kilos overweight (oh well, waffle place, hello).

SUMMER CLOTHES

…the first outdoor swim of the year at Vadaš Thermal Bath in Štúrovo, Slovakia. (Okay, it happened more than a month ago. I’m actually  writing this post since years weeks. I hope one day – if life allows me – I can get back to real-time blogging.)

Sturovo strand 3

…going on a holiday! I haven’t been on a summer holiday since 2009 (ten days at the Bulgarian coast. I’m still dreaming about it). (I usually do budget travelling, that means Venice in February, Prague in October and that epic Moravian road tour in December. I haven’t felt a cold that freezing in my entire life than I did at a bus stop in Moravske Budejovice at 22.30 pm last winter.)
