August recap

by ada

The results of the US election gave me a huge motivation for blogging, because looking back at my sunny summer adventures in 2015 is much more comforting than looking forward to a future in which Donald Trump rules the world; which perspective is, let’s be real, more than terrifying.

Since I can’t change anything (I wish I could), I am now feverishly preparing for WW3 and transforming our cellar into a nuclear shelter do what I can to blend out real life problems and live in the past, so here you are, August 2015.

I started the month with German fireworks in Langenargen:

It was raining light!

It was also a fine opportunity to take out of focus photos of the festively decorated ships…

…and of an unusually empty Lindau at night:

A few days later I spent 11 hours on a train…

… to get home in time for my mother’s birthday:

She received some handmade presents from Milo and Móricka:

In the process of creating it Milo got caught red handed. He looks quite embarrassed:

Móricka was rather pleased with the results:

Everybody coped with the heat in his own way: Milo took possession of the electric fan…

…Móricka wore his tribal colours with pride…

…The Cat buried herself in the closet (don’t ask)…

pottom

…my sister put up the grill…

…and I tackled some long overdue personal projects:

When the time came, I crossed Austria again…

…and got back to Bregenz:

I spent a lot of time on the road…

…making decisions…

…and getting my feet…

…and my bike dirty…

…on forest paths…

…and in water:

I met all kinds of animals…

…but mainly pigs:

untitled-115-2

I took the Muttersbergbahn…

untitled-110-2

…to look over the mountains around Bludenz:

untitled-84m

I swam in the Bodensee…

…and in the Dornbirner Ach:

One time I even went to night swimming (the giant groups of bats and mosquitos swarming over me are not pictured but they were REAL):

untitled-6

I visited new cities…

untitled-27-2

…and revisited old favourites:

I also crossed borders, because that’s what I like to do:

I listened to music during the day…

and at night:

I saw (but wasn’t allowed to play) the organ Hans Buchner has once practised on (more than 500 years ago):

I met really old Chinese ladies…

…Bavarian witches…

…and whole families in splendid Vorarlberger tracht:

And, tired but happy, I ended the month just the same way as I started it: with fireworks. This time in Bregenz:

things that make me happy

by ada

I can’t believe it’s been more than a year since I last posted in this series. That tells tales about my circumstances lately. I’ve failed miserably with my New Year’s resolution of sharing more of my life here anyway – not that I don’t have a life because I rather do, but it seems I’m not good at getting personal. What I’m good at is taking photos of buildings and flowers, so this place has inevitably became kind of a travel blog, but without the joys and excitement of actual travelling. You know, something like an unofficial Budapest Guide for Weirdos (and for all who enjoy looking at dead butterflies and old medical instruments). This is a lose-lose situation, I’m afraid.

But there are still the small things, like…

…this super cheap waffle place and their raspberry mousse that tastes just like I remember it from my childhood.

Untitled 2

…pretty bees on pretty flowers.

Untitled 1

…visiting museums.

Magyar Természettudományi Múzeum 35

…doing small trips.

Hungarian train

…summer food.

Vácrátót arboretum wild strawberry

…thrifted summer clothes. Too bad I’m seven kilos overweight (oh well, waffle place, hello).

SUMMER CLOTHES

…the first outdoor swim of the year at Vadaš Thermal Bath in Štúrovo, Slovakia. (Okay, it happened more than a month ago. I’m actually  writing this post since years weeks. I hope one day – if life allows me – I can get back to real-time blogging.)

Sturovo strand 3

…going on a holiday! I haven’t been on a summer holiday since 2009 (ten days at the Bulgarian coast. I’m still dreaming about it). (I usually do budget travelling, that means Venice in February, Prague in October and that epic Moravian road tour in December. I haven’t felt a cold that freezing in my entire life than I did at a bus stop in Moravske Budejovice at 22.30 pm last winter.)

a photo an hour, approximately, yesterday

by ada

6 am:

Getting up, drinking my morning coffee, reading my feeds (yes, it contains a lot of cat gifs) and listening to The Cat complaining about how she had a terrible night. She actually spent it with sleeping on her electric heating pillow under her 100% woolen blanket, without waking up even one single time, but from the complaining and moaning she does every morning you would think she fought dragons all night long to save the ungrateful world.

6

7 am: Early morning commute. The hate-part of the day.

7

8 am – 1 pm:

Staring at the screen of the anaesthetic machine and trying to keep up with all the new information.

Also, for obvious reasons I can’t offer you a photo of neither the OR nor the hospital, so here is the basement where we change. Hungarian Health Care System in all its glory.

8

1 pm:

Having lunch in the park. It’s not quite the right weather for it yet but I was craving the sun so much that even the cold wind couldn’t hold me back.

13

2 pm:

Crossing the city.

145

148

143

3 pm:

Buying groceries…

144

…and receiving physiotherapy treatment for my back.

15

4 pm:

On my way to the library.

163

162

161

5 – 7 pm:

Having coffee with my friend Ancsangyalka at the cafeteria of the library. Usually it’s only one coffee and a lot of studying, but lately we are both very tired, stressed out and somewhat frustrated, so we discussed our favourite topic, the folly of the human race, very thoroughly this time (instead of studying, obviously).

171

172

17

7 – 9 pm:

Checking out the Budapest Fish Festival.

191

192

195

9 pm:

On my way home. So much nicer than in the morning, isn’t it?

211

10 pm:

Evening routine: showering, drinking bone broth, checking mails and offering emotional support to The Cat after her terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day, which involved sleeping, sleeping, eating and some more sleeping. Hard is a cat’s life, y’all.

January cold desolate

by ada

This photo clearly shows how my time spent with commuting has grown enormously lately. The only way to survive Hungarian public transportation is to block the world completely out. I can’t wait to finally finish my hospital training and be back to biking in livable cities, even if this means a significant decrease in literary joys that enrich my days at 7 am.

the October game

by ada

My October readings were:

  • The Handmaid’s Tale, because I have a sure hand if it comes to picking books that make me feel uncomfortable
  • cat comics, because I’m into comics lately. No matter what subject they are about as long as they don’t want to share too much verbal information. It seems that I’ve successfully eliminated my need for words. I’m looking forward to enjoy some zoekboeks in November. They contain no letters at all! (and because I’m sure this book was inspired by The Cat, who, though too old and too comfortable to actually do the killing, thinks about it all the time)
  • four more Nancy Drew stories in e-book format, because I’m starting to get the feeling. I’m not quite sure if I like this feeling, though. I mean, this girl Nancy Drew is about one of the most annoying personalities somebody could ever create; and the Zeitgeist of those terrible 1980’s (I know them. I spent my childhood in the 80’s. Most of my issues have their roots in those awkward years), really, I don’t even want to remember. Even if I’m sure that the 80’s in the socialist Hungary with us marching in uniforms and singing the Soviet national anthem in Russian has not much in common with the 80’s in the USA, the land of freedom and infinite possibilities (and serial killers) (and AIDS); the memory of those years still haunts me and makes me actually like the idea of growing older.
